Why a Pre-Market Routine Matters

Trading without preparation is like taking an exam without studying. A consistent pre-market routine helps you start each day with clarity, focus, and a plan.

The 30-Minute Pre-Market Routine

Phase 1: Personal Check-In (5 minutes)

  • Rate your mood: (1-10): Are you calm, anxious, excited?
  • Rate your sleep quality: Poor sleep = reduced decision-making
  • Rate your energy level: Low energy days → trade smaller or sit out
  • Check for emotional baggage: Yesterday's loss still bothering you?
  • Phase 2: Market Context (10 minutes)

  • Global markets overnight: US markets (S&P 500, NASDAQ), European indices, Asian markets
  • SGX Nifty / GIFT Nifty: Pre-market indication for Indian markets
  • News scan: Major economic data, earnings, policy announcements
  • Sector activity: Which sectors are in focus today?
  • Phase 3: Technical Analysis (10 minutes)

  • Key levels: Support and resistance for your watched instruments
  • Trend assessment: Is the market trending or ranging?
  • Identify setups: Which instruments have valid setups today?
  • Write down your plan: Entry, stop loss, target for each potential trade
  • Phase 4: Risk Settings (5 minutes)

  • Set daily loss limit: "I will stop trading if I lose ₹X today"
  • Set trade count limit: Maximum number of trades today
  • Position sizing: Calculate lot sizes based on stop loss distance
  • Set alerts: Price alerts for your key levels
  • What to Avoid Before Market Open

  • **Don't read too many opinions**: Too much information causes analysis paralysis
  • **Don't carry yesterday's bias**: Each day is a fresh start
  • **Don't trade in the first 5 minutes** (unless your strategy specifically targets the open): Opening volatility is noisy
  • **Don't skip the routine because you're "feeling good"**: Consistency matters most when you feel you don't need it
  • Adapting for Indian Market Hours
