What is Forex Trading?

The foreign exchange (forex) market is where currencies are traded. It's the world's largest and most liquid financial market, with daily turnover exceeding $7 trillion.

Key Characteristics

  • 24-hour market: Open 5 days a week across global time zones
  • Decentralized: No single exchange — traded over-the-counter (OTC)
  • High liquidity: Major pairs can be traded with minimal slippage
  • Leverage: Typically 50:1 to 200:1 (varies by regulation)
  • Understanding Currency Pairs

    What's a Currency Pair?

Currencies are always quoted in pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/JPY, USD/INR

  • Base currency: First currency (EUR in EUR/USD)
  • Quote currency: Second currency (USD in EUR/USD)
  • EUR/USD = 1.0800 means 1 EUR buys 1.0800 USD
  • Major Pairs

    Minor and Exotic Pairs

  • Minors: EUR/GBP, EUR/JPY (no USD)
  • Exotics: USD/INR, USD/TRY, EUR/PLN (emerging market currencies)
  • What is a Pip?

A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard price move in forex:

  • Most pairs: 4th decimal place (0.0001)
  • JPY pairs: 2nd decimal place (0.01)
  • Example: EUR/USD moves from 1.0800 to 1.0825 = 25 pips

    Pip Value Calculation

For a standard lot (100,000 units) in EUR/USD:

  • 1 pip = $10
  • For mini lot (10,000 units): 1 pip = $1
  • For micro lot (1,000 units): 1 pip = $0.10
